Graduate Admissions

Graduates with good academic records from fully accredited post-secondary educational institutions will be considered for admission to graduate work at Case Western Reserve University. Admission at the master’s or doctoral level must be recommended by the Civil Engineering faculty and must be approved by the Dean of Graduate Studies.

The Civil Engineering Department at Case Western Reserve University offers the Master (MSc) and Doctorate (Ph.D.) degrees in Civil Engineering. Our faculty conduct funded research in a variety of areas and are seeking highly qualified graduate students to assist in this research.

Application Guidelines

Please consider these guidelines to decide whether you should apply. Students not fitting within the guidelines but demonstrating they would be excellent students may also be admitted.

The department of Graduate Studies has implemented a new on-line application system. It is reccommended that you use this system to insure accuracy and the ease of tracking your application submission.

You may select to download an application and submit a paper form via regular mail if you prefer. This option will be available through the Fall 06 semester.

Please follow the instructions listed below.

The official application form may be found on the Graduate Studies website.

Your application is comprised of separate forms, designated Part A and Part B.

Part A and Part B are to be completed and returned to the department you select, together with all of the required supporting items identified and described in these instructions. Please send all of these items together in a single envelope to facilitate processing and to avoid an incomplete application due to the documents being inadvertently separated. Send this envelope to:

Department of Civil Engineering
Graduate Admissions - Bingham 208
Case Western Reserve University
10900 Euclid Avenue
Cleveland, OH
44106-7201
U.S.A.

The processing of your application requires concurrent submission of parts A and B.

Although there are no hard deadlines for domestic applicants, international application materials should be received by:

  • February 1 for Fall semester admission
  • October 1 for Spring semester admission

Due to the strick SEVIS rules, receiving your material by these dates will allow your application to be processed in a timely manner.

Financial Aid

Financial Aid Financial aid is very competitive and only awarded to the very best students. Most of these awards are given to Fall applicants, but a few may be given to Spring applicants. If you wish to be considered for financial aid you must indicate so in item 9 of Part A of your Application. The department faculty make the final decisions concerning the award and type of aid offered to the student applicants. Any supplemental forms for aid consideration are sent to you directly by the department. Decisions on awarding aid occur at various times during the application process, but generally are announced in March for fall semester and in November for spring semester enrollment.

If you are not a U.S. citizen, you should submit with Application Part A an affidavit of financial support sufficient to cover your anticipated expenses. In the event of your admission to the University without an aid award, such certification on file will facilitate authorization of the appropriate visa.

Academic Records

On your application forms (A and B), you are required to identify all post-secondary educational institutions you have attended, and an official transcript from each is required to be enclosed with Part A of your application.

Please type or print your name and address on the envelopes before enclosing one with each request for the official transcript to your college/university registrar(s). You may use additional envelopes of your own, provided each envelope is returned sealed and signed by the registrar across the flap.

Recommendations

You must submit three recommendation forms with your Part A of your completed application. It is suggested that these recommendations come from those sufficiently familiar to assess your academic preparation, abilities and accomplishments. Use your own envelopes for recommendations; however, each is to be returned sealed and signed by the respondent across the flap.

Application Fee

A nonrefundable application fee of $50 is required for each application submitted, and is to be remitted with Part B of your application. Please make your check or money order payable to Case Western Reserve University. Applicants from outside the United States must remit the fee either by International Money Order or by a check drawn on a U.S. bank. If your fee is being paid by check from another person, your name must appear on the face of that check.

Other Documentation

Official score reports of all standardized tests (GRE, TOEFL, etc.) designated for receipt by the University (Code 1105) will be coordinated with your application by the Graduate Admission Office. Pending our receipt of your scores from the testing agencies, you may also want to send directly to the department a copy of your “candidate score report” when you receive it.

You are free to include with Part A of your application any supporting materials of your own selection, e.g., a list of your publications.
