Welcome to Civil Engineering at Case!

Bingham Building

The Department of Civil Engineering of the Case School of Engineering offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering with courses in almost all the traditional civil engineering subjects. The Bachelor of Science program in Civil Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012 - telephone: (410) 347-7700.

The graduate program offers the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Civil Engineering with a focus in structures, engineering mechanics, geotechnical and environmental engineering. An active research program gives the students opportunities to participate in projects related to design, analysis, and testing.

Katie Fromwiller's 'vomit comet' experience

CE senior student Katie Fromwiller has the experience of a lifetime. She flew on the NASA’s low-gravity plane nicknamed “vomit comet” while conducting experiments that will be used to design the device for oxygen extraction on lunar surface. Details of the story can be found at

Professor Mullen presents two papers at SCAN 2008

Professor Mullen presented

  • Robert L. Mullen, Rafi L. Muhanna, Mehdi Modares, “Exact Hullof Linear Interval Equations with Matrices Arising from Engineering Applications”
  • Bart F. Zalewski and Robert L. Mullen, “Enclosure of the Solutions to Interval Fredholm Equations of the First and Second Kind”

at SCAN 2008 - The 13th GAMM - IMACS International Symposium on Scientific Computing, Computer Arithmetic and Verified Numerical Computations at The University of Texas at El Paso on September 29 - October 3, 2008. The goal of SCAN 2008 is to advance the frontiers in verified numerical computations, as well as in their application to computational engineering and science.

SCAN is sponsored by GAMM (International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics) and IMACS (International Association for Mathematics and Computers in Simulation).

These symposia have covered the numerical and algorithmic aspects of scientific computing, with a strong emphasis on verification of computed results, as well as on arithmetic, programming, and algorithmic tools for this purpose. Their objectives have been both to propagate current applications and research and to promote a greater understanding and increased awareness of the subject matters.

Professor Huckelbridge in WKYC TV story on ODOT: Innerbelt Bridge to shut down for stress test next week

“I believe it’s safe and that ODOT is undertaking its current testing from a very conservative viewpoint,” said Case Western Reserve University structural engineering Professor Art Huckelbridge, who has studied the bridge’s condition since the 90’s.

“It’s one of the most heavily-traveled bridges in Ohio, " he said, “and because of that it is checked and monitored perhaps more than any other bridge in the state.” WKYC TV Article WDOK interview
