Academic Program Details
The degree program will be paced as a two-year period of study that may be completed by practicing infrastructure engineers pursuing the degree on a part-time basis. Courses will be offered in the early morning, early evening, or on weekends to allow practicing engineers to participate, but it is anticipated that a reasonable portion of Infrastructure Project activities will be conducted during working hours at the student’s home organization. The Infrastructure Engineering program will be constructed within CWRU’s current template for a Masters of Science (MS) degree in engineering. This requires students to complete 27 hours of graduate coursework (18 hrs of which must be at a 400 level or higher) following an approved individual plan of study while maintaining a GPA of at least 2.75. No more than 6 hrs of transfer credit may be applied. Students must complete a 9-hour thesis, 3-6 hrs. of “Special Problems” credit culminating in a written report and examination, or (given sufficient evidence of experience) a comprehensive exam. Students must also maintain continuous registration once begin the program unless a leave of absence is approved by Graduate Studies.
The inaugural version of the Infrastructure Engineering program will be configured as follows:
- 12 hours of infrastructure core made up of three 4 hr. lecture/laboratory courses
- 6 hours of Infrastructure Project that addresses a scholarly element of an existing infrastructure problem faced by one of the participating infrastructure organizations.
- 9 hours of electives made up of new 3-hr. infrastructure electives, existing Civil Engineering electives or approved electives in related areas of engineering, science, business or law.
Full-time graduate students will follow a similar pace, but it is anticipated they will pursue the thesis option. The inaugural schedule of this program is illustrated below:
C1 – ECIV 452 - Infrastructure Aging and Assessment Technologies C2 – ECIV 453 - Infrastructure Rehabilitation Design C3 – ECIV 456 - Intelligent Infrastructure Systems C4 – ECIV 454 - Modeling Infrastructure Systems C5 – ECIV 451 - Infrastructure Engineering Practice C6 – ECIV 455 - Infrastructure Engineering Decision Making P – ECIV 650 - Infrastructure Project
